Painted paper still life

Although this project took four to five, 30 minute class periods, the results were well worth it. They turned out so cute, and the kids really had fun designing their own bouquets.

These were done by my 5th grade students. I have four fifth grade classes of 20-24 students each. I have each class for 40 minutes either 2 or 3 times a weeks, depending on the block schedule. It took two weeks to complete this whole process.

Day one: Using recycled cardboard and sticky backed foam, students spent a day creating a stamp and stamping a tempera paint background onto chip board.

Students spent another day making painted papers to use for the flowers, vases and table for their still life. This was a great activity to get hands on time mixing colors and creating texture.

Once a week, we practice drawing skills in a sketch book,  so I tied that activity into this lesson and taught the children how to draw various flowers, leaves and vases, and they practiced this in their sketchbooks.

From their designs they sketched lightly onto the backside of the painted papers and then started cutting their vases, flowers, stems and leaves out and attaching with Elmer's glue.

We gave the finished piece a good coat of Mod Podge.

Children will get these back in time to take home for Mother's Day.

O'Keeffe Inspired Acrylic Paintings

Using Georgia O'Keeffe as our inspiration artist, my homeschool girls painted these beautiful flowers in acrylics on a 12 x 12 canvas. I printed off around 7 different photos from the internet and let them select which one they wanted to paint.

They started off identifying the basic shapes, starting with the center and working their way out. They completed these in 1-1/2 hours. Beautiful work!

Watermelon Paintings

I wrapped up my last two summer painting workshops this week with watermelon still life paintings in acrylic. I encouraged students to focus on the beautiful colors in our subject to inspire them in their paintings. Here's some highlights.

This group wanted to take a bite out of their watermelon before they painted it! Gotta love the creativity of a child! This was a younger group so we simplified and went for the whimsical look.

I always teach them to plan and practice before they start their paintings.

Adult Painting Workshop

This spring I held my first ever "Adult Painting Workshop". The workshop was 4 weeks long and taught everything one needs to know to get started painting with acrylics. I tried to cover it all, from brushes, products, styles of painting, mixed medium, special effects, texture to getting your painting started, values, perspective, color mixing, inspiration and top coats. Painters created one abstract of their choice, and then they all painted a still life together. Here's some of the beautiful paintings.

This one's not quite finished.

I had five very talented ladies!
